"What are you seeking?"

The first gripping question Jesus asked, our honest responses, and what it would be like to sit around the dinner table with him
4

What a joy to be with many of you last night as we kicked off our new 6-session Conversations series, based on my forthcoming prayer guide. (Thanks for your excitement! If you missed that announcement and invitation, see my last post here!)

We began with Jesus’ very first question in John 1, “What are you seeking?” and, whew, if that isn’t THE question, right? Perhaps the way we answer it (or how we feel about being asked) gets to the truest parts of our hearts more than we realize?

If you weren’t able to join us, I’ve included a recorded portion of our guided practice along with some introductory remarks about meditative scripture reading and imaginative prayer. I hope this can provide you with some space to be with Jesus and let him lead you into an honest conversation together. Please note that there are longer quiet pauses so you can ponder and pray.

My favorite part, and what seemed to resonate with those who were there, was toward the end when we pictured what it would be like to linger around the table with Jesus like those first disciples… What questions would you ask to get to know him? What questions would you want him to ask you? How would Jesus show he was interested in you? How does Jesus seem to you in this scene? What intrigues you about him?

If those are the kinds of questions you’d love to contemplate further, there’s still plenty of time to join our live zoom sessions on Sunday evenings at 8:30 EST. You can register here to receive the link for the upcoming weeks.

This Sunday, March 23rd, we’ll explore the question, “Why are you so afraid?” (Spoiler alert: I think Jesus was more curious about their hearts than condemning their beliefs or behaviors! It matters how we hear his tone of voice, no?)

Hope to see you then!

Sarah

For several years now, I’ve been captivated by the piercing questions Jesus asked people— “Do you want to be well?” “Why are you so afraid?” “Who do you say that I am?” “Do you love me?” Each of those questions, and many more, sparked the most beautiful interactions between Jesus and His friends. And I believe He is still curiously inviting us into the…
