THE COURTYARD
“And Peter followed Him at a distance.” Luke 22:54
“This is not where I thought He was going.
This is not how I thought He would lead.
This is not what I thought it should be like.
This is not who I thought I would be....”
Even one of Jesus’ best friends followed Him at a distance. In Peter’s story, we are all given permission to be a little more human. To doubt and fear and question and crumble in our weakest hour. To know that part of our faith journey can, indeed, include falling apart, falling away, falling asleep when Jesus asked us to pray.
Listen above as we join a disillusioned, disappointed, disoriented disciple of Christ and find companionship in our own doubts and denials. May we too be met with nothing but compassion and mercy.
Tomorrow, we’ll follow Jesus into The Palace. Until then, go in peace this Wednesday of Holy Week.

I’ve been reflecting on Judas this Lent season. I have wondered if each of the disciples were provided an opportunity for betrayal. The Bible doesn’t say this, but human nature would suggest that it’s possible. I love this poem because it illustrates Peter’s confusion, but also his open heartedness. He kept his heart rooted in the knowledge of who Jesus is, even as circumstances didn’t make sense. It’s what separated him and Judas.
Trust in the Lord.
Lean not on your own understanding.
Oh Sarah, I never had seen those 5 words before, “Peter followed at a distance.” Thank you for this gift today. I am struck by so many things, but what’s really standing out: Jesus compassion in the middle of rejection - his identity was so solid…May today be filled with the knowledge of his sacrificial love and may we too be strengthened by the joy he has set before us. 🐏🤍🕊️
