My new book was 10 years in the making. Let me tell you a bit of the backstory.

It began as a talk I gave to college students in 2014. My aim was simply to guide these young adults toward a fresh encounter with Christ— a dialogue, a face to face interaction, a two-way conversation as with a friend. The only way I figured I could do that was to explore 3 different questions Jesus asked His followers and see if perhaps He was asking us those same questions still. Using gentle prompts, with enough space to be still and quiet, we stumbled upon a sacred moment to connect richly with Jesus.

We started with “What do you want me to do for you?” and the room full of 20-somethings grew quiet as they honestly submitted their deepest dreams and desires to a listening Christ.

We continued with “Who do you say I am?” and wrestled to get to the heart of who Jesus really was to each of us.

We ended with “Do you love me?” and felt the tenderness in Christ’s curious question as we attempted to answer Him as best we could.

This beautiful experience felt like we were making a core memory with Christ, something we could savor and return to later. It was a rare moment of depth and connection with our friend Jesus to treasure forever.

As we know with any human relationship, forging a friendship requires hours of conversation, building trust, sharing experiences and making memories together. It’s really no different with the God of the universe who longs for an ever-deepening, mutual relationship with each one of us.

Over the years since that evening, I’ve loved facilitating many other experiential interactions with Jesus, whether in retreats, through this Selah community, or in my individual spiritual direction practice.

But it’s never been in writing, until now.

This deeply intimate prayer guide centers around 7 core questions Jesus asked His friends that I believe He still wants to ask us today. Each chapter offers a guided practice for engaging in conversation with Christ, a poem I’ve written for further reflection, and an honest prayer of response. Each prompt is intended to provide a starting point for you and Jesus to take it from there together.

Consider this little book a sacred place for you to lean closely into Jesus. Receive His questions, reflect on your own, and respond from your soul.

This book is beautifully written. The flow of passages, practices, poems, and prayers feels like I’m on a gentle journey with Jesus. It is just the right amount of reflection and invitation.
